Falls Prevention Week: MAC Inc. Leads the Charge in Keeping Seniors Safe
September 22–26 marks Falls Prevention Awareness Week, a national campaign aimed at raising awareness about the risks of falls among older adults and promoting strategies to prevent them. Falling is not a normal part of aging, and with the right interventions, such as exercise, home safety modifications, and regular health checkups, falls can be significantly reduced.
In Maryland, the Department of Aging partners with organizations across the state to offer evidence-based programs and resources to help older adults stay safe and independent. One of the key players on the Eastern Shore is MAC, the Area Agency on Aging.
MAC Inc. is actively participating in Falls Prevention Week through its Stepping On workshop, a free, seven-week program proven to reduce falls by 31%. Held at MAC’s office in Salisbury, the workshop brings together experts, including physical therapists, pharmacists, and vision specialists, to educate participants on balance, strength, medication safety, and home hazard reduction.
The program is part of a broader initiative led by MAC’s Living Well Center of Excellence, which coordinates statewide training and data collection for wellness programs like Stepping On and PEARLS (a depression intervention program).
Falls Prevention Week is a reminder that aging safely is possible, and organizations like MAC are making it happen every day. To learn more or register for a workshop, visit macinc.org or contact Nancy Hedlesky at 410-742-0505 ext. 131 or nhedlesky@macinc.org.
