Honoring the Anniversary of the Older Americans Act

On July 14th, 1965, the Older Americans Act became law, laying the foundation for essential programs and services that help older adults live safely, independently, and with dignity in their communities.

The Older Americans Act was created in response to a growing need for community-based services for older adults. More than 60 years later, it remains one of the nation’s most important pieces of legislation supporting older adults, caregivers, and families.

Through a nationwide network of state and Area Agencies on Aging, the Older Americans Act supports services such as:

• Nutrition and home-delivered meal programs
• Health and wellness initiatives
• Family caregiver support
• Transportation and in-home assistance
• Elder abuse prevention and legal services
• Long-term care advocacy
• Information, referrals, and connections to local resources

As the Area Agency on Aging for Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore, MAC helps bring these vital programs and services to older adults, caregivers, and families throughout Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, and Dorchester counties.
