Beat the Heat
During periods of extreme heat, remember to:
- Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Check on older family members, friends, and neighbors to ensure they are staying cool and safe.
As temperatures climb, we encourage anyone age 55 or older who needs a place to cool off to visit MAC. Please also help us spread the word so those who may be vulnerable to the heat know there is a welcoming place available in our community.
Together, we can help keep our community safe, healthy, and cool this summer.
As the weather begins to warm up, many of us look forward to longer day, fresh air, and more time outdoors. The change in season can bring new energy and new opportunities to stay active, social, and engaged. For older adults, it is also a good time to take a few extra steps to stay safe, comfortable, and healthy as temperatures rise. Warmer months can be enjoyable, but they can also bring challenges such as heat, dehydration, sun exposure, and changes in routine. Preparing early can help older adults make the most of the season while protecting their health and well-being.
Â
One of the most important things to remember is to stay hydrated. As we age, our bodies may not signal thirst as clearly, which makes it easier to become dehydrated. Drinking water throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty, can make a big difference. It is also helpful to limit too much time in the heat and choose cooler parts of the day for walks, errands, or outdoor activities. Dressing for the weather is another simple but important step. Lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, and sun protection like hats or sunglasses can help older adults feel more comfortable when spending time outside. Indoors, fans, air conditioning, and shaded spaces can help keep the home cool during especially warm days.
Â
The warmer months are also a great time to check in on health and home safety. This could mean reviewing medications that may increase heat sensitivity, making sure outdoor walkways are clear and safe, or preparing easy meals and snacks for hot days. Family members, caregivers, and neighbors can also play an important role by checking in and helping older adults stay connected and supported.
Just as important, spring and summer can offer wonderful opportunities for healthy aging. Fresh air, gentle movement, gardening, community events, and time with friends or loved ones can all support both physical and emotional well-being. With a little preparation, older adults can enjoy the season with greater confidence and comfort.
Â
At MAC, we know that healthy aging includes staying safe, connected, and informed through every season. Preparing for the warmer months is one more way to support independence, wellness, and quality of life for older adults in our community.
