It was a routine MAC Meals on Wheels delivery recently to a participant who lived alone with his beloved canine companion. Sadly, recently the driver found the participant had passed away sometime during the few previous days.
The man’s beloved little dog, Tucker, aged 10, was also found in the home, thankfully alive, but in dire need of medical attention.
The proper authorities were alerted. The dog was brought to MAC and was given food and water. But the pup developed seizures and was rushed to a veterinarian. Fortunately, this part of the story has a happy ending: the dog had gone without a critical medication for several days (due to his owner’s passing) but quickly recovered when that medication was resumed. Tucker has since found a new loving home, with the MAC staffer who had taken him to the vet.
Most days when he delivered a meal to the man, MAC Meals on Wheels driver Kirk Sterling also stopped to chat with him. “It was obvious the dog meant the world to him,” Sterling said. “It was all he talked about.”
The man also had received pet food for his beloved canine companion as part of MAC’s Meals on Wheels Loves Pets program. “He often said how grateful he was for the help to care for the dog,” Sterling said. “He would be so happy to know his dog has a loving home.”
